The Oak Harbor High School football team rolled to a 42-0 win at Everett Friday, Sept. 26, scoring all of its points in the first half, but the most impressive statistic belonged to the defense.

The Wildcats limited Everett (0-1, 0-4) to only 86 total yards.

Oak Harbor was particularly stingy on the ground, holding the Seagulls to 11 rushing yards on 28 carries, or less than half a yard per try. Eight of the carries resulted in negative yardage.

Mark Johnston and Dejon Devroe, who “had really good defensive games,” according to coach Jay Turner, paced the standout effort by Oak Harbor.

Michael Laningham scored on a pick-six, Devroe and D’Andre Bellamy recovered fumbles and Koby Cosper recorded a sack to highlight the defensive show.

Devroe also starred on offense, rushing for a team high 164 yards on only seven carries (23.4 yards per carry) and a touchdown. He was also the top receiver, snagging two passes for 32 yards and a score.

Quarterback Clay Doughty added his own starry stat, connecting on all seven of his passes for 58 yards.

Oak Harbor scored twice in the first quarter and then blew the game open with four long TDs in the second.

Devroe tallied first to open the rout; Princeton Lollar ran four yards for the second score.

Doughty threw a 21-yard scoring pass to Devroe to start the second-quarter barrage.

Then came Laningham’s 56-yard interception return, followed by a 72-yard sprint by Devroe.

Zach Jones completed the scoring with a 25-yard run.

Johnston kicked all six extra points.

The offensive starters sat the second half, while the defensive starters played only the first series after the break.

Ten different Wildcats carried the ball in the game and five caught passes.

Lollar rushed for 76 yards on 11 carries, and Jones caught two passes for 14 yards.

Oak Harbor finished with 408 yards of offense.

On defense, 18 different players registered tackles. Johnston led with seven; Chris Humphries and Jones had five apiece; and Devroe, Cosper and Tyler Adamson had four each.

After the conference-opening win over Everett, Oak Harbor (1-0, 2-1) now faces Arlington (1-0, 3-1) at home at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in the homecoming game.

“Overall we played well (against Everett), but we will need to be better this week in order to beat Arlington,” Turner said.

The Eagles have nonleague wins over 4A Cascade and Snohomish and defeated Marysville Getchell 27-21 in league play last Friday. Their only loss is to third-ranked Eastside Catholic.

Arlington is led by Andrew Kalahar, the top passer in the Wesco 3A North. Heading into last Friday’s game, Kalahar had 32 completions in 56 attempts for 504 yards.

Connor Bovard leads the division in receiving with 217 yards on 10 receptions.

Alex Hayward is the Eagles’ top runner with 287 yards in 51 carries.
