Getting a boost from an unexpected source helped carry the Oak Harbor High School tennis team to a 5-2 nonleague win over visiting Mountlake Terrace Thursday, Sept. 27.
The Wildcats’ inexperienced doubles teams have struggled at times this fall, but the duos put it all together to sweep the three matches in straight sets against the Hawks (2-9): 1, Tom Dale/Jacob Nelson won 6-3, 6-2; 2, Sean Kelley/Jozef Mendoza won 7-6(4), 6-3; and 3, Casiano Atienza/Antonio Unpingco won 6-3, 6-4.
Coach Horace Mells said, “This is the first match of the season where we won all of the doubles matches, which also indicates an improvement in doubles play.”
Oak Harbor split the four singles matches, getting wins from No. 2 David Kusnick (6-1, 6-0) and No. 4 Harrison Miller (6-1, 6-0).
William Southard lost in first singles (6-4, 0-6, 1-6) and Carter Saar fell in third singles (4-6, 6-4, 2-6).
