“It was the second day of spring vacation and the Oak Harbor soccer team was coming off a big victory. So did coach Steve Barker give his team a day off on Tuesday? No way. While their classmates were off sunning themselves in Hawaii or at home lounging on the couch watching videos, the Wildcats were hard at work Tuesday morning in the school’s fieldhouse.Barker had the team drilling and drilling, just 12 hours after it won 2-0 at Mountlake Terrace. However, Barker wasn’t standing on the sidelines during the practice. He also took part in the drills. The practice ended with some sprints and a pep talk from Barker.If you play like this tomorrow night you will be all right, Barker told his team. Then the tired Wildcats went home to rest up for tonight’s home game with Mariner.I came home and sat in the hot tub, said a tuckered Kellen Ward. We had a good practice. The coach wants to make sure we get the drills right. And playing in the field house is like playing on the turf, which is good for us because we don’t get a chance to play on turf that much.Barker said working in the field house helps his team concentrate on keeping the ball on the ground.The field house is really the best place to practice,” Barker said. The ball moves much faster in here. Playing in here teaches them to be more unselfish and give up the ball.”The practice also should help keep the Wildcats’ skills sharp. Oak Harbor is currently playing its best soccer of the season, having gone unbeaten in the last three games. The Wildcats and Edmonds-Woodway battled to a 0-0 draw last Tuesday. Then Oak Harbor defeated Kamiak 1-0 Friday on a goal by Brian Gliniak, who was assisted by Jess Barker. The contest was their final tuneup before Monday’s 4-A Western Conference division opener.Gliniak, off a cornerkick by Jason Fisher, and Ward accounted for Oak Harbor’s goals against Mountlake Terrace.Ward got his goal following a header by Chris Olson.The ball came right to my feet. I just turned and let go a 30-yard linedrive shot. It went inside the near post. I was surprised, Ward said. We’ve been talking about taking more shots. I said ‘what the heck!’ I went ahead and shot it, and it was a good thing I did.The Wildcats have been playing solid defense lately and getting strong goal-tending from Craig Vanderstoep, who has been in goal the last two games.We’re playing extremely well,” Barker said. The backline has done a good job. We’ve struggled at times to score, but that will come. This is a highly motivated team that works hard. You could see that in practice today.”
