The Oak Harbor and Coupeville high school volleyball teams primed for the regular season by competing in a six-team jamboree in Oak Harbor Saturday, Sept. 6.

The Wildcats went 5-1, winning single sets over Anacortes, Mount Vernon, Darrington and Coupeville and splitting a two-set match with La Conner.

“It’s nice to put uniforms on, line-ups in and work out some butterflies before regular matches begin,” coach Kerri Molitor said. “The girls did very well. Our teamwork was fantastic. We are looking forward to the season.”

Though Coupeville did not pick up any wins, coach Breanne Smedley said it was “a great opportunity…to play in a match-like situation before the season starts.”

“We were able to work out some kinks and get used to playing together,” she added. “Eight out of the 11 players on the roster were playing in their first varsity match today, so I am very proud of their first showing. Our focus this week in practice was serving, passing and serve-receive rotations. We did all of these things very well. Overall, I think this is a great starting point for us to improve on.”

Both Oak Harbor and Coupeville begin the regular season with nonleague matches on the road at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9. The Wildcats head to Ferndale and the Wolves go to South Whidbey.
