The host Whidbey Island Running Club produced four team titles and five individual champions in the Runnin’ the Rock cross country meet at the Gallery Golf Course Saturday, Oct. 9.
Six running clubs (114 runners) and 14 unattached runners took park in the event on the back nine of the local golf course. WIRC coach Catie Rodeheffer said the challenging course was made even more difficult by high winds and heavy rain, but it received high marks by the runners and coaches for its uniqueness, view and difficulty.
WIRC took first in the 6-and-under, sub-bantam (7-8), midget girls (11-12) and youth boys (13-14) divisions.
Jaime Hernandez, 8 (sub-bantam boys); Ryan Vasileff, 10 (bantam boys); John Rodeheffer, 14 (youth boys); Nikki Blanchard, 15 (young women); and Caley Powers, 15 (young men) each took division titles.
Hernandez won in his first cross country meet, while Vasileff took control at the one-mile mark and won going away.
Rodeheffer edged Aaron Roe of Bellevue; the two are considered the favorites for the Pacific Northwest Junior Olympic race in November.
Coach Rodeheffer said one of the outstanding individual efforts by a WIRC runner was the work of Carly Crowther in the midget girls race. Crowther placed 14th and shaved almost three minutes off her previous personal best.
Rodeheffer said, “Carly’s commitment and excellent work ethic were exciting to see pay off, and she will be a vital part of the midget girls’ team’s drive to nationals.”
