Picking its best time to pick up its first win, the Coupeville tennis team won 4-1 at Friday Harbor Wednesday, April 18, in the first of three matches to determine the league title.

The two teams will meet in Coupeville at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 23, and then again in Friday Harbor Friday, April 27, to finish the series.

The Wolves, who dropped their first four nonleague matches, won all but first singles at Friday Harbor.

Allie Hanigan “broke through with a big win at No. 2 singles,” coach Ken Stange said.

Hanigan won 6-0, 6-0 and “played consistently” and was “in control from the get go,” Stange said.

In doubles action, Amanda d’Almeida and Lexi Blanchette won 6-1, 6-0; Grayson Akins and Holly Craggs won 3-6, 6-0, 7-1; and Julia Myers and Makenna Martyn won 7-6.

The third doubles match featured only one set because of time restraints.

Stange said d’Almeida and Blanchette “hammered their opponents” and Akins and Craggs “survived a first-set meltdown.”

Emily Burchfield lost in No. 1 singles 2-6, 2-6.

Stange said, “It was exciting to pick up our first win of the season. The hope is that we can take that taste of success and parlay it into better play in our future matches.”

The Wolves play Oak Harbor at home at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19.
