Wolves fall at SW but still in playoff hunt / Soccer

The Coupeville High School soccer team began what could be a busy week with a 4-0 loss at South Whidbey Monday, Oct. 21.

With the setback, the Wolves remain in a fifth-place tie with Sultan in the North Sound Conference standings with one league match remaining.

Coupeville (1-8, 1-11-2) hosts Granite Falls (4-5, 7-7) and Sultan (1-8, 1-12-2) travels to Cedar Park Christian (4-5, 7-6) at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23.

If Coupeville and Sultan are still tied after Wednesday’s conference finale, they will meet at Mickey Clark Field at 6 p.m. Thursday to break the tie and determine the league’s fifth and final playoff team.

That winner will host the Northwest Conference’s fourth-place team, most likely Mount Baker (0-14), at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in a district tournament play-in game.

And that winner will move on to the eight-team district tournament beginning Monday, Oct. 28, at the North Sound Conference’s No. 3 seed, either Granite Falls or Cedar Park Christian, in a loser-out match.

The district tournament continues Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the higher seed and finishes Saturday, Nov. 2, at Whatcom Community College. The top five teams qualify for the bi-district tournament.
