The Coupeville High School soccer team put together long stretches of strong play, but third-ranked Archbishop Murphy prevailed 6-0 Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Everett.

Coupeville came out in a defensive formation and the Wolves blanked Murphy (12-0, 14-0) early with their “strongest 25 minutes of team defense so far this season,” according to coach Dan d’Almeida.

D’Almeida said his team “tired a bit” and gave up three goals in a five-minute span that led to a 3-0 halftime deficit.

He said, “Besides the solid work in goal by McKayla Bailey and our center backs Jen Spark and Anna Bailey, our midfield actually stepped up and possessed the ball with a number of one touch and quick passing.”

Joye Jackson took over in goal for Coupeville in the second half and “was effective after some early nerves,” d’Almeida said. “For having not played in net for many games, I was pleased that she seemed sharp for the postseason should we need her.”

Although the Wolves didn’t score, d’Almeida said, “Amanda (d’Almeida) and Haley (Marx) are getting in synch and our outside mids and reserves did well.”

The Wolves (1-11, 1-13) host Granite Falls (7-5, 8-6) in Senior Night at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the final home match of 2012.
