Wolves gain inside track to playoffs / Soccer

The Coupeville High School soccer team picked up a critical win and sophomore Derek Levya picked up a record when the Wolves beat Port Townsend 3-1 Tuesday at Mickey Clark Field.

The win gives the Wolves a stranglehold on the second and final district playoff spot from the Olympic League.

Coupeville won the season series with Port Townsend 2-1 and holds a one-match lead with two games left. The Wolves (4-3, 5-6-2) would have to lose both matches and the Redhawks (3-4, 3-8) win both for PT to pass Coupeville in the standings. For that to happen, the Wolves would need to lose to winless Chimacum and the Redhawks would have to top Klahowya, which hasn’t lost a league match in four years.

If Coupeville finishes second, it will play Bellevue Christian (8-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Oak Harbor’s Wildcat Memorial Stadium in a district loser-out match.

Coupeville 3, Port Townsend 1

“The boys brought good energy and intensity to take the deciding game versus Port Townsend,” Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson said.

Leyva scored Coupeville’s first goal, giving him 21 for the season and breaking the record held by his cousin Abraham Leyva.

That score came just before halftime, then after the break he assisted on a goal by cousin Aram Leyva to put the Wolves up 2-0.

Port Townsend quickly countered with a goal, then Aram Leyva, with another assist from Derek Leyva, scored again “on a highlight-reel-worthy header,” according to Nelson.

Coupeville plays at Chimacum (0-7, 0-10) at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, and finishes the regular season at home with Klahowya (6-2, 10-2-1) at 5 p.m. Monday, April 30.
