Completing an impressive run through the second half of the Cascade Conference schedule with a 3-0 win at Lakewood Tuesday, Oct. 25, the Coupeville High School volleyball team journeys to Lynden Christian High School for the district tournament Saturday, Oct. 29.

The Wolves open tournament play at 11 a.m. against either Meridian (5-7) or Nooksack Valley (5-8) in a loser-out contest. Their opponent won’t be determined until the Northwest Conference completes regular season play Wednesday night.

If Coupeville survives the first-round match, it will advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament and need to win one of its next two matches to qualify for tri-district.

After struggling with several close losses early in the year and a 2-5 record the first time through the conference slate, Coupeville coach Toni Crebbin said her team would improve as it gelled and welcomed back an injured Makenna Martyn.

She was right as the Wolves went 5-2 in the second round.

Are the Wolves peaking at the right time as they head to the playoffs? Crebbin said, “I think so. It feels good.”

The win over Lakewood (6-8) lifted the Wolves (7-7, 8-7) into fourth in the final league standings.

Coupeville defeated the Cougars 25-18, 25-19, 25-20.

In the second game, the Wolves trailed 7-1 before rallying for the win.

Crebbin credited the blocking of Martyn and Bessie Walstad with slowing Lakewood hitting ace Brittany Parmentier and forcing the Cougars out of their power game.

Katie Smith rapped nine kills for Coupeville, and Martyn and Ali Trumbull added five each. Walstad recorded 16 digs, and Taya Boonstra dished out 20 assists.
