A Lakewood comeback stunned the Coupeville volleyball team as the Cougars nipped host Wolves 3-2 Thursday, Sept. 29.

Coupeville held match point with a 14-10 lead in the final set only to see Lakewood reel off four consecutive points to keep the game alive and eventually win 19-17.

The Cougars (3-4) won the first and fourth games 25-21 and 25-14, and the Wolves took the second and third 25-21 and 25-22.

Ironically, the team that took the early lead in each game eventually lost the set.

In game one, no team led my more than two points until the Cougars went up 21-18. Five service errors doomed Coupeville and thwarted momentum.

Coupeville fell behind 5-2 in the second set but came back. With Chelsea Hudgins serving, the Wolves went on a 5-0 run midway through the game to go up 14-11. Kills by Ali Trumbull, Katie Smith and Bessie Walstad helped put the game away.

In game three, Coupeville wiped away a 7-1 deficit on a 9-0 run backed by a pair of Smith kills.

The Wolves built a five-point lead, 17-12, but the Cougars surged to a tie at 19. A tip and an ace by Walstad regained the momentum for Coupeville.

The Wolves went up 5-1 in game four, but Lakewood went on a 7-1 spurt, took the lead and steadily pulled away.

In the decisive game five, two kills by Walstad and another from Madison Tisa-McPhee helped give the home team a 4-1 lead.

Lakewood rebounded to go up 10-9, then Coupeville appeared to have the match in hand when a 5-0 run, thanks to three kills from Walstad, lifted it to one point from victory, 14-10.

Two hitting errors by the Wolves and two aces jumped the Cougars back into the match.

Lakewood scored its final nine points without the benefit of a kill.

Walstad finished with 10 kills and five digs. Taya Boonstra handed out 34 assists, and Hudgins had six digs.

Coupeville posted only four aces in the match to Lakewood’s 15.

The Wolves (2-5, 3-5) host Archbishop Murphy (5-1) Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
