One hit wasn’t nearly enough as the Coupeville High School baseball team lost 12-1 in five innings to Meridian at Robert Sherman Field Thursday, April 5.

The Trojans’ Jeremy Brockman limited the Wolves to one hit while striking out six and walking three and his teammates pounded out 13 hits to help 10th-ranked Meridian (4-4) to the nonleague win.

Meridian scored five runs in the first inning when it appeared Coupeville and pitcher Ben Etzell would escape unscathed. With two outs and only one on, the Trojans exploded with a walk, error, double, single and another error.

In the bottom of the first, Jake Tumblin walked, stole second and scored on Etzell’s base hit. That was it for the Coupeville offense.

The only other time the Wolves threatened was in the fourth when Zach McDonald and Korbin Korzan received one-out walks.

Meridian added a run in the second and then iced the game with a five-run fourth on seven hits and an error.

Coupeville (0-6, 2-9) returns to league play with Granite Falls (4-3, 4-4) at 4 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Sherman Field.
