After dropping its final regular season game 14-4 in five innings at Granite Falls Tuesday, May 13, the Coupeville High School softball team can now turn its attention to the District 1A Tournament at Janiki Fields in Sedro-Woolley this weekend.

Coupeville (3-14, 4-14) opens the eight-team district tournament at 4 p.m. Friday, May 16, against Lynden Christian (10-9).

The winner and loser of that game meets their counterparts from the Meridian (4-15)/Blaine (11-9) game at 6 p.m. Friday.

The tournament continues at noon Saturday, May 17.

All but one of the Wolves’ losses this year came to 2A schools; Coupeville was 3-1 against 1A teams.

The Wolves will have to win two games to grab one of the five qualifying spots in the tri-district tournament.

Granite Falls (16-1, 7-2), which won the Cascade Conference title, clubbed 16 hits, including three triples, in its win over Coupeville.

Coupeville jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Tigers responded with four runs in their half of the inning and added five more in the second to pull away.

The Wolves had only five hits, one a double by McKayla Bailey.

“Defensively we had both physical and a few mental errors,” co-coach David King said. “We just aren’t playing fundamentally defense.

“We have two days to fix our defense and get back to making good contact when hitting.”
