The Coupeville High School soccer team outscored Vashon Island 3-2 in the second half, but it was much too little too late to rescue the Wolves.
Coupeville lost 8-4 to the Pirates in the district tournament semifinals Tuesday, May 8, at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High School.
The Wolves need to win two straight in the consolation bracket to get a ticket to state. A tough task awaits them in the next match, Klahowya. Coupeville faces the Eagles at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Silverdale Stadium. The Wolves (7-8-2) have never beaten the Eagles (13-3-1), a string of 10 matches over the past four years.
In the loss to Nisqually League champion Vashon (13-1-3), Coupeville fell behind 6-1 in the first half.
Aram Leyva, with an assist from William Nelson, scored for the Wolves in the first half; Derek Leyva recorded a hat trick in the second.
Derek Leyva upped his school single season scoring record to 24 goals.
