“The Coupeville girls basketball team continued to steamroll towards the playoffs Friday, as they defeated LaConner, 48-38, for the teams’ fifth win in a row.The Wolves did not start the night looking like their 7-3 record as the team missed jump shot after jump shot. Luckily for Coupeville, the Braves were just as inept from the floor, as the score at the end of the first rest at 13-8 in favor of the Wolves.We knew that we needed to be pumped up but we just hadn’t got there yet, said Coupeville sophomore Carly Guillory. The Wolves as a team shot just 17-61 from the floor but took 15 more shots than the Braves. We ended up making the same number of shots from the floor as they did except we made a couple more threes than they did, said Coupeville head coach Greg Oldham. It took us a few more shots but that is OK. The Wolves managed to make up for their jump shots at the line, as the team hit 10-13. According to Oldham, Coupeville has now reached 60 percent for the season from the free-throw stripe, a mark unmatched in recent years.During the second quarter the two teams went toe-to-toe with the Wolves coming out just a head of the Braves by two, to extend their lead to 23-16, entering the half. LaConner came out blazing during the third quarter as they went on a 15-2 run on Coupeville. The scoring streak for the Braves gave them the lead for the first and only point during the game, 33-27. It was hard to just stay out there and still look forward to winning, said Coupeville freshman Vanessa Davis.But as the Wolves have become accustomed to during their win streak, Coupeville rebounded to score seven straight points to end the third and regain the lead, 34-33.The final quarter opened with the two teams trading scores until Coupeville sophomore Brianne King stole the ball from a LaConner player and went to the hole for the basket. After LaConner turned the ball over and fouled King, she went to the line and hit a free throw. The one point lead spelled the demise of the Braves as Coupeville went on a 12-0 run to end the game and bring home a victory. I think we just looked at the score and knew that we just needed to make a run, said King. King and junior Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby came up big for the Wolves, as they have done all season. The two players combined for 37 points nine rebounds, picked the Braves pockets for eight steals and went 7-8 from the line. Literally the biggest addition for the Wolves this season continues to be Davis as she is the tallest player for Coupeville’s varsity squad. We really wanted to give her a chance to develop and play 20 plus minutes every night, said Oldham. I am really not surprised that she is playing as well as she is. The 5-foot-10 forward continued to give the Wolves height in the middle as she pulled down 10 rebounds along with a blocked shot. I was just determined to get them, said Davis. I just wanted them for the team. The Wolves are now preparing for their battle with Archbishop Thomas Murphy (ATM) this Friday. ATM has clinched the league title so our choice is second or third, said Oldham.ATM comes into the game undefeated, which may give the Wolves a bit of deja vu from last season. Coupeville took two games from an undefeated Wildcat team at the end of last season to get into the playoffs.
