Courtney Boyd’s goal in the final two minutes of the second half put an exclamation point on the Coupeville High School soccer team’s never quit, never give in attitude that has been the hallmark of the 2008 season.

Trailing 6-0 Boyd, the junior midfielder, wove her way through Cedarcrest defenders and got off a hard shot at Jordan Cleman.

The Red Wolf goalkeeper couldn’t handle the ball and fell in the goal crease. Boyd regained possession and poked the rebound home in the lower left corner of the net for the score.

Despite the 6-1 loss, coach Mike Thornton said he was very happy with the way the team had improved from the last time they faced Cedarcrest.

“This was definitely a different game than the last one,” he said. “The last game we played against them they beat us pretty good, it was 12-0.”

Cedarcrest senior captain Brooke Chapman scored a pair of goals in the first half to give the Red Wolves a 2-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Red Wolves peppered Coupeville keeper Megan Smith with shots on goal, but the junior made several good saves in clutch situations.

Jamie Bottman, Clare O’Donnell, Chapman and Kori Butterfield managed to put balls in the net during the second 40 minutes of action to give Cedarcrest a 6-0 lead.

“We played some good soccer tonight,” Thornton said. “There was some good movement and the rotations were better all the way through.”

Coupeville plays its final regular season game against South Whidbey at noon Saturday afternoon, and Thornton said the team is looking forward to the playoffs that begin next week.

“We’re coming along at the right time,” he said. “If we can keep coming along and communicating like we are, I think the playoff game, depending on who we play, should be a good one.”
