Snapping a four-match conference losing streak, the Coupeville volleyball team swept past visiting Granite Falls 3-0 Thursday, Sept. 22.

Although the Wolves are 1-4 (2-4 overall) in conference play, coach Toni Crebbin said her squad is in a large group of teams of equal talent behind the league’s clear leader, King’s.

One of the Wolves’ losses is to King’s, the other three were close defeats on the road to Archbishop Murphy, Cedarcrest and South Whidbey.

Crebbin said her team has a good shot of avenging those losses when the schools come to Coupeville later this fall, particularly with an injured Makenna Martyn returning to bolster the offense.

The Wolves take part in the South Whidbey Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, and then go to Sultan (0-4, 0-5) Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.

Coupeville swept Granite Falls (1-4), but it wasn’t easy. The Wolves, playing in front of a boisterous rooting section, had to come back to win each set, taking the match 25-23, 25-20, 25-23.

Coupeville trailed late in game one, but a flourish at the end helped eke out the win.

In game two, the Wolves finally tied the score at 15-15, then took the lead on a pair of Katie Smith kills.

Coupeville dropped behind in game three, knotted the score at 10, build a four-point lead and slipped to a 21-21 tie. A couple of kills from Madison Tisa-McPhee helped finish out the win.

Crebbin was happy her team won but was disappointed in some of the team’s play: “That was the most inconsistent we have played. We were really up and down; we should have dominated the match.”

Smith smacked 13 kills and Bessie Walstad had seven. Taya Boonstra passed out 19 assists.
