Blending solid pitching, strong defense and timely hitting, the Coupeville fastpitch team ripped Archbishop Murphy 9-3 Friday, March 23, in Everett.

Senior Ali Trumbull pitched a complete game, allowing only seven hits and two earned runs while striking out eight and walking just two.

Co-coach David King said, “She got ahead of the batters and mixed in her off-speed pitches to keep the batters off balance.”

King said “defensively this was our best game of the season” as the Wolves committed only two errors, turned two double plays and “made all the plays.”

Madi Roberts led off the game with an infield hit and got the Wolves’ two-run first going.

The Wolves plated three more runs in the second to go up 5-1. Taya Boonstra started it by being hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Haley Sherman’s double. Trumbull singled in Sherman and Bree Messner singled in Trumbull.

Coupeville scored three in the sixth to cement the win; the big hit was Hailey Hammer’s two-run double.

Hammer finished with four RBI and Roberts and Messner each had two hits and a run batted in.

The Wolves received eight walks — three to McKayla Bailey — as they “showed patience at the plate,” King said.

Coupeville (2-1, 3-2), just a half-game out of first place, travels to Sultan (0-2) Monday, March 26, and then hosts first-place Granite Falls (2-0) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 27. That will be followed by a home game with rival South Whidbey (1-3, 2-2) Monday, April 2.
