Wolves top Lakewood 3-1 in volleyball

fter dropping the first set, the Coupeville volleyball team took control and zipped past host Lakewood 3-1 Wednesday.

The Cougars won the first game 25-17. Wolves’ coach Toni Crebbin said, “I don’t know why it takes us one game to wake up.”

After that first game, the alarm went off and the Wolves easily took the next three games, 25-14, 25-16, 25-21. The last game wasn’t as close as the score indicates, according Crebbin, because Coupeville was playing without middle hitter Kyra Ilyankoff, who was dominating the net until leaving with an injury. After the match, Crebbin wasn’t sure the extent of the injury or how long Ilyankoff would be out.

Ilyankoff had five stuff blocks and “got her hands on a lot of other hits” according to Crebbin.

Julie Swankie was 28-28 serving and added 27 assists. Michelle Riddle had nine kills and 21 digs; sister Jessica Riddle drove home 14 kills.

The Wolves will be competing at the South Whidbey Invitational Saturday.
