Behind a stingy defense, the Coupeville High School girls basketball team drubbed visiting Granite Falls 48-21 on Senior Night Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The Wolves (4-9, 6-13) end the regular season at King’s (9-4, 12-7) at 7 p.m. Friday and then begin district tournament play at fourth-ranked Lynden Christian (16-3) Monday, Feb. 4. (Game time is to be determined.)

In the win over Granite Falls (0-13, 1-18), Coupeville held the Tigers to only three points in the first half, leading 9-3 at the quarter and 24-3 at the break.

The tone for the contest was set from the get-go as Coupeville forced Granite Falls into three turnovers and three air balls in its first six possessions.

Coupeville coach David King used 10 players in the first period, giving all six seniors playing time in their final home game.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Wolves, who hadn’t won since defeating Granite Falls 39-33 Jan. 4 the first time through the league schedule.

The Wolves received contributions from many fronts; the first seven field goals were drained by seven different players.

The Tigers finally got going with 11 points in the third quarter but couldn’t make up ground as the Wolves continued to spread the wealth as seven players combined to score 15.

Ten of the 11 Wolves who played scored, including all six seniors: Bessie Walstad eight, Lauren Escalle five, Rhiannon Ellsworth four, Haley Marx two, Jai’Lysa Hoskins two and Katie Kiel two.

Freshman Makana Stone, who scored the Wolves’ first and last points in the game, finished with nine. Sophomore Hailey Hammer added seven, junior Amanda Fabrizi six and junior Breeanna Messner three.

King was pleased with the defensive effort and that his club “moved the ball a lot better on offense.”

He added that his team hasn’t pressed much this season and liked how it made the necessary adjustments in the second half to make it more effective.

Senior cheerleaders Darian Emerick, Emily Clay, Iris Ryckaert, Nicole Becker and Teri Lee were honored at half time.
