Wrapping up its third consecutive league title, the Coupeville High School tennis team slipped by visiting Friday Harbor 3-2 Wednesday, Oct. 12.

The win gave the Wolves a 2-1 edge in the season series between the only other 1A team in District 1 and the crown of the two-team league. All matches this season finished 3-2, with Coupeville winning the first and third.

Now the two team tangles in the district tournament Saturday in Friday Harbor to determine which players advance to quad-district Oct. 24 in Seattle. The singles and doubles champions jump right to quad-district. The runners up will need to win a play-in match to secure a berth.

Wednesday, Coupeville won the two singles matches and third doubles.

In first singles, Nathan Lamb defeated Sandro Meyer 6-3, 6-2 in a key victory in “the most exciting match of the day,” according to coach Ken Stange.  Lamb dropped the first two contests against Friday Harbor this season, but played “the best tennis of his career,” Stange said, to claim the crucial point.

Stange said, “Sandro is a solid player who has a great deal of power behind each of his shots. Nathan countered Sandro with an equal measure of power. Nathan also used his consistency to outlast Sandro.”

Ben Wehrman cruised in second singles, defeating Cody Coyne 6-0, 6-1.

“Ben was simply dominant,” Stange said.

In third doubles, Brandon Kelley and Brian Norris (CHS) defeated Aaron Prager and Brandon Irwin 6-3, 6-1

Stange said, “I was counting on BnB to bring us an easy point…and they delivered in a big way.”

Friday Harbor’s Parker Satin and Hayden Place topped Aaron Curtin and Taku Yamauchi  6-3, 6-2 in first doubles.

In second doubles, the Wolverines’ Sean Hills and Ryan Cole got by Jason Knoll and Larry Hurlburt 6-3, 6-0.
