The Coupeville High School fastpitch team accomplished in the first game of the 2012 season what it took 16 contests to do last spring — win.

The Wolves clobbered visiting Concrete 22-3 Saturday, March 10, in the season opener for both teams.

For Coupeville, the victory Saturday was basically a walk in the softball park. The Wolves needed only five hits to rack up the 22 runs as two Lion pitchers combined to serve up 17 bases-on-balls in the game shortened to four-and-a-half innings because of the 10-run rule.

Coupeville took control early with a seven-run first. It tacked on two in the second and three in the third before cementing the game with a 10-run fourth.

Ali Trumbull led the offense by going 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBI. She also picked up the pitching win, throwing the first four innings, yielding only one hit, striking out three and walking four.

McKayla Bailey pitched the fifth and notched two Ks.

Bre Messner helped the offense with a double, four runs and an RBI; Madeline Roberts and Bessie Walstad each had a hit and two runs; Taya Boonstra went 2-for-2 with a run; Hailey Hammer and Bailey each walked three times and scored three runs; and Haley Sherman had two RBI.

Co-head coach David King lauded his players’ patience at the plate, taking advantage of the Lions’ inability to throw strikes.

He was also pleased with the Coupeville defense which committed only one error behind Trumbull, who “threw really well,” he said.

King lauded Boonstra for two nice plays in the outfield.

Coupeville entertains Meridian at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, in its next game.
