Coupeville prepped for its Tuesday, Oct. 11, conference showdown with Friday Harbor in tennis by winning the Friday Harbor Tournament Saturday, Oct. 8.

The Wolves and Wolverines tangle Tuesday in Coupeville at 3 p.m. with the league title on the line. The two teams play a three-match series each fall to determine the conference crown, and they are knotted at a match apiece heading into Tuesday’s finale.

Saturday, Coupeville defeated Friday Harbor and Cavelero of Lake Stevens 36-30-24 to take the tournament hosted by the Wolverines.

The Wolves dominated the singles portion of the tournament, with Nathan Lamb defeating teammate Ben Wehrman 6-4 for the title.

In the semifinals, Lamb won 6-1 and Wehrman played “some of his best tennis of his high-school career,” according to coach Ken Stange, in winning 6-4.

In doubles, Coupeville’s Aaron Curtin and Taku Yamauchi crashed what was expected to be an all-Friday Harbor affair in the finals by winning in the semis 6-4.

The pair fell to Friday Harbor’s No. 1 duo in the finals 6-1.

Jason Knoll and Larry Hurlburt suffered a semi-final loss to the eventual champions, but bounced back to nab third 6-4.

Knoll and Hurlburt played “consistent” tennis in their win, Stange said, with Hurlburt providing “a great deal of power” against the lobbing Wolverine attack.
