Oak Harbor bumped its team status up Saturday, taking sixth at the nine-team Western Conference North Divisional Championships at Snohomish.
The Wildcats, who finished seventh in the regular season dual meet standings, earned 173 team points, finishing ahead of Monroe (167.5), Arlington (149) and Mount Vernon (72). Lake Stevens won the meet with 339 points.
“We wrestled at about what I expected from the team,†OHHS head coach Mike Crebbin said.
Four wrestlers, senior Sean O’Brien, senior Jeff Lang, senior David Marriott and junior Miles Hartt, placed in the top three and earned automatic bids to the regional tournament Feb. 10-11 at Jackson High School in Mill Creek.
O’Brien won Oak Harbor’s lone title at 171 pounds, earning a 9-5 decision in his championship match.
“Sean continues to look better and better as he builds his conditioning base,†Crebbin said. “Now we have another week to get in better shape. I’ve really been pushing him.â€
Marriott (140) and Lang (145) both finished second in their championship matches losing by decisions. Hartt (152) won his final match via an 11-3 major decision to clinch third place and an automatic regional berth.
Oak Harbor senior Rob Lemme (125) and junior Matt Johnston (215) still have chances to enter the regional tournament as number five seeds. They face the WesCo South number four seeds at the beginning of regionals. The winner moves on, the loser is eliminated.
Wildcat seniors Josh Stratton (140) and Colin Blyther (135) along with junior Daniel Varn (275) all finished sixth and are alternates.
Crebbin knows his remaining wrestlers are tough enough to advance on to state, now he just hopes they adjust to the different strategies that come with a high level of wrestling.
“If we can bring a new look with new moves and new motion, we will neutralize those wrestlers who spend a lot of time scouting and making a game plan for us,†he said. “You don’t want to be unprepared on the mat when you find out what worked on an opponent at the beginning of the season doesn’t work on them now.â€
