First AAU tournament a success

The inaugural Oak Harbor Spring Classic AAU girls basketball tournament April 18 through April 20 was a big success, and the Wildcat teams turned in some outstanding performances.

This was the first time Oak Harbor hosted such a tournament for teams in grades fifth through eighth.

Playing against strong competition, the fifth-and eighth-grade teams finished last in their respective pools, but the seventh grade team, coached by William Roberts, reached the championship game and finished second.

Rebecca Howland, one of the tournament coordinators, said all of the Oak Harbor girls did everything they could to make the city proud.

“We look forward to doing this in the years to come,” she said.

Bob Stremel helped coordinate the event and sailors of Fleet Readiness Northwest provided all the volunteers who helped the tournament run smoothly.
