For the second week in a row, Oak Harbor High School wrestlers Sam Zook and Meredith Bain captured first place in their respective weight classes at a tournament, this time at the Decatur Hurricane Harris Invitational Saturday, Dec. 10.
For their efforts, Zook and Bain earned Most Valuable Wrestler honors.
In addition to competing at Decatur, Oak Harbor defeated visiting Kamiak 46-30 Thursday, Dec. 8, in a dual meet. The meet was originally scheduled as a double-dual, but Meadowvale and Marysville-Pilchuck did not attend because of concerns about snowy road conditions.
Decatur Invitational
The Oak Harbor boys placed ninth out of 17 teams with 94 points. Peninsula took the team title with 171.5 points.
The Wildcats girls took fourth out of 13 teams even though they entered only seven competitors. Decatur won the girls division with 101 points.
Zook won the 285-pound class with falls in the first two rounds and a 2-1 decision over Will Willsey of Lincoln in the title match.
Four Wildcats placed third: Caleb Fitzgerald (120 pounds), Blake McBride (145), Nick Dugin (182) and Michael Fisken (195). Fitzgerald outscored his opponents 32-0 in his three wins; Fisken dropped his first match and then rolled through the consolation bracket with three big wins.
Shamus Walden (106) and Zion Gomez (126) split four bouts, and Abe Coleman (220) won one of three. Dawson Seabolt (113), Lucas Nickelson (132), Dylan Sanchez (138) and Chris Brooks (152) each went 0-2.
Bain (190) won by a bye and two falls to take her title.
Caitlin Woodworth (170) won three of four matches, all by pins, to claim third.
Ella Erikson (105) defeated teammate Taylor Cress in the match for third and fourth places. Grace Chargualaf (130) took fourth.
Jessica Monaghan (125) won one of three matches, and Cheyenne Winchester (105) dropped two matches.
Oak Harbor 46, Kamiak 30
Brooks (earning his first varsity win), Sanchez, Fisken and Zook all won by falls in the meet with the Knights.
Fitzgerald (8-0), Gomez (15-5) and Dugin (22-9) were winners by major decisions.
McBride won 6-2, and Seabolt won by forfeit.
Oak Harbor (2-0) faces Sultan (0-0) and host Snohomish (1-1) in a double dual meet at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, and then entertains Marysville-Pilchuck (1-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15.
